"Quick Fix No.2" - How to kick off keyword rankings from a new site

Welcome to “quick fix” content SEO case study number 2, where we will look at a newish website that needed some help getting off the starting blocks.

Read on and discover how I helped my client get these results in just over 2 months!

The brief

"Leverage Google Search Console to kick-start ranking opportunities for a new website."

Setting

A SaaS startup in the soft launch stage. As such, they are juggling many things: app development, beta users and marketing. Part of the marketing process I’m involved with here is blog content.

I’ve been working for months on blog clusters, mixing low-hanging keyword fruit with meatier keyphrases to gain SERP visibility while attracting our decision-makers. The problem was that our website was still in development.

When juggling multiple pieces of a larger puzzle, progress can feel slow. But something else didn’t feel right - Why weren’t we getting any traffic despite publishing regularly?

Initial Problems

I like to track stats, and I kept seeing nothing but tumbleweeds when it came to our organic traffic growth - where the heck is it?

Why weren’t we showing up in SERPs, and why weren’t we ranking for keywords and phrases?

The Quick Fix

In May 2023, we submitted a site map to Google Search Console (which I didn’t realise hadn’t been done) and followed that up with link submission for individual pages

During that time, I also got to work on primary site SEO and mapping out our efforts on a spreadsheet for tracking. It’s not something a new site owner always thinks about doing, so if it isn’t in your web designer’s scope, then know you will have to do that yourself (or find an outsourced route).

Results

As of 11th August 2023, we have:

  • 31 blog posts published

  • 152 keywords in positions 1-100 (from blogs and main site pages)

  • Average SERP position 29.6%

  • Impressions are over 1000 per day

  • Clicks have improved at the same rate as impressions

And there’s a more significant boost to stats to come. Not because I’m publishing hundreds of new posts but because the existing posts and pages will likely improve in positioning. Plus, I’ll be auditing them.

Next steps

While we have a good start, there’s lots to do for this startup. I’m taking a quick break to work on LinkedIn strategy and content, but the blog isn’t far from my mind.

We need to

  • Submit content to Bing

  • Develop and deliver a strategy for backlink gains and guest posting

  • Develop and deliver a strategy for press features

  • Dive into app feature guides, case studies and user cases

  • Return to my competitor keyword gap analysis and see how else we can shake up the space!

  • Assist with website updates that include service page content and templated content.
